What image resolution/codec should I use?

Resolution (pixels)

We prefer video material to be in ‘flat’ (‘full height‘) format. The following resolutions are accepted:

  • 1920 x 1080 – “HD” – aspect ratio 1:1.78 or ’16/9′
  • 1998 x 1080 – “Flat” – aspect ratio 1:1.85
  • 2048 x 1080 – “2K” – aspect ratio 1:1.90

We can also show scope (‘full width‘) format

  • 2048 x 858 – “Scope” – aspect ratio 1:2.39 – remark: all advertising is shown in 2K/FLAT (1080 height), so your Scope image will be letterboxed above and below image.

Note

If you don’t know what ‘flat’ and ‘scope’ mean, the 1920×1080 (HD) format is probably what you should be using.

Framerate (frames-per-second)

  • Frame rate: 24 fps is preferred
  • Frame rate: 25 fps is also accepted
  • So no 29.7 fps, no 60 fps, …

Quality

  • no interlacing

File format

  • Preferably: High Quality HD MOV/MP4/AVI – e.g. ProRes 422/H.264 – no proprietary codecs like AVID/Cineform/RED – as a rule: if you can’t play it on VLC player, we can’t process it.
  • Alternatively: sequence of TIFF/TGA only the frames of the advert, no countdown/spot ID frames
